Background

The first three conferences in this series were held under the auspices of the IASS through IASS Working Group 13 on Numerical Methods; they were held in Belgium (1983), Tokyo (1993), and Taipei (1997). 

The fourth conference, IASS-IACM 2000, was the first to be sponsored jointly by the IASS and the IACM and was held in Chania, Crete, Greece in June of 2000.  The fifth conference, IASS-IACM 2005, was held June 1-4, 2005 in Salzburg Austria under the auspices of the IASS, IASS Working Group 13, and the International and the German Associations for Computational Mechanics (IACM & GACM). 

The joint IASS-IACM sponsorship has proven to be very successful technically and to provide fruitful intellectual interactions between members of the two organizations (although many participants have been members of both) as well as with non-member participants.
